Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a serious psychological disorder with symptoms like disturbances or abnormalities of mood. It is also known as manic-depressive illness. This can lead to extreme and abrupt changes in mood that affect one’s behavior and can influence relationships and career in a bad way. Bipolar disorder can lead to both excessive enthusiasm as well as depression. The person might feel excited, irritable, sad, hopeless and normal too at different times. At worst, situations can become out of control leading to life threatening activities like suicidal attempts. The periods of bipolar depression vary from person to person.

According to Ayurveda, Bipolar disorder occurs because of the imbalance of the physical doshas (vata, pitta, and kapha) as well as the psychological properties which are satva, rajas and tamas.

  • Extreme mood swings with varying time periods
  • Depression
  • Mania

Ayurvedic View

Ayurveda recommends adaptogenic herbs for bipolar disorder treatment. These compounds are basically some sort of tonics that enhance resistance to long term stress and strengthen the immune system. They are equally effective for both conditions of Bipolar disorder including mania or depression.
